A Night-time bombing mission was a risky call on my part, but I knew someone had to do it. Our 110 squadron was grounded due to bad weather over the Kertch Straight, so I volunteered our group to take up the mission. The task was to hit a supply depo containing fuel and ammo deep in enemy lines that would be moved to the front in the morning. Attacking at night would allow us to penetrate enemy airspace undetected and hopefully catch the supply depot undefended from air cover.

The gamble paid off, Stab 4 and I took off and navigated in complete darkness directly to our target. Some of the Soviet troops had left lights on in the camp so it was pretty easy to spot from the air. We both made our runs and ended up decimating the camp with no targets visible after the last run.

We left at treetop level flying as low as possible to dodge any scrambled fighters or AAA near our position. The flight home was dangerous but paid off, having no contact on our return flight.
